After spending 10 days in a stall, $585.62 in vet bills and feeling all but hopeless; I now have seen the light at the end of the tunnel with my darling Roxy.

12 days ago she came in from pasture with a lot of swelling on her knee. After consulting with one vet, he prescribed $90 of antibiotics and a decent care regimen, which included cold therapy, epsom salts and DMSO. After 12 days and no improvment, I placed a call into another vet which had mobile x-ray capabilities. I had a fear of a bone chip floating around making ground meat in her carpus.

The official diagnosis is possible fracture {The fracture is so small it’s hard to be sure.}, but evident bone edema, and the start of cellulitis. I felt terrible that I hadn’t prevented the cellulitis, to which the vet replied, A horse is a horse is a horse. She’s either going to get it or not, and sometimes you can’t do anything to prevent it. She gave injections of steroids, heavier antiobiotics and recommended sweating the leg. After the first 24 hour sweating, her leg looked 80% better. I now have hope we will recover from this ugly injury.

Horse people are nuts. I have cried and cried over this tiny little leg injury. Guilty for being madly in love with an animal that eats off the area it pees on.
